Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence caused ructions in Serbia and contributed to the collapse of Serbia’s DSS-NS coalition government. President Boris Tadic has dissolved parliament and called a general election for May 11.
Kosovo and whether Serbia should join the EU are expected to be the main issues of the election.
Which of these parties will be part of the coalition that will form government in Serbia after the May elections?
The Socialist Party of Serbia is the party Slobodan Milosevic formed in July 1990 when two other parties merged. With the ousting of Milosevic in 2000 the party became part of the opposition. It won 5.64% of the vote in the 2007 elections and 5.97% of the vote with, Mulutin Mrkonjic, its candidaet for the 2008 presidential elections.
The largest social democratic party in Serbia is lead by President, Boris Tadic. It claims the mantle of the old Democratic Party that was active in the old Kingdom of Yugoslavia and existed up until being banned by Tito in 1945. The Democratic Party received 22.71% of the vote in the 2007 elections and it’s candidate for the Presidency, Boris Tadic, received 35.39% (51.19% second round) in the 2008 presidential elections.
New Serbia is a moderate nationalist party lead by Velimir Illic. It formed in 1997 when a number of dissidents split form the Serbian Renewal Movement. It ran. NS received 10 of the 47 seats its coalition with DSS and other conservative parties won in the 2007 elections. It’s candidate for the 2008 Presidential elections received 7.43% of the vote.
The Serbian Radical Party is a nationalist right-wing party lead by Tomislav Nikolic while it’s president, Vojislav Seselj, is in The Hague. It received 39.99% of the vote (48.81% second round) in the 2008 Presidential elections with Tomislav Nikolic as its candidate and 28.59% of the vote in the 2007 elections.
The G-17 Plus is a liberal conservative party that started life as an NGO in 1997 when a group of 17 experts (economists, historians, political scientists) formed it. It became a political party in December 2002 after Miroljub Labus left the Democratic Party and became its first President. It’s current President is Mladan Dinkic and they received 6.82% of the vote in the 2007 elections.
The coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party, Civic Alliance of Serbia, the Social Democratic Union and the League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina received 5.31% of the vote in the 2007 elections.
The Democratic Party of Serbia is lead by former Prime Minister Vojislav Koštunica and is the largest conservative political party in Serbia and claims the heritage of the old Democratic Party. The DSS was formed when a wing of the Democratic Party decided to leave its coalition and form a new one in 1992. They received 16.55% of the vote in the 2007 elections as part of a coalition with New Serbia and other parties.
